These insects are not true Moths, but are in the family HYDROPSYCHIDAE.
The larvae live in streams, each living in a 'case' or 'retreat' which they make and cover in pebbles, sand, or detritus. The larvae can carry their case on their body, or attach the retreat to a rock, and also some construct a net attached to the retreat to catch passing food items.
The adults emerge from the water in groups, facilitating mating. The moths are grey with variable dark markings. The wingspan is about 2 cms.
