A first record of gregarious moth pest, Herpetogramma playcapna (Meyrick)
on Fern species Angiopteris evecta (G. Forst.) Hoffm from Malaysia,
Malaysian Applied Biology, Volume 43, Part 2 (2014), pp. 105-109.

The Caterpillar of this species is green with a black head and prothorax. The caterpillars have been found feeding gregariously on:

  • Giant Fern ( Angiopteris evecta, POLYPODOPHYTA ).

    The caterpillars live and feed in a shelter created by rolling some fronds of the fern into a ball.

    The adult moth has yellow wings with variable brown spots and wiggly lines, and broad brown wing margins. The moth has a wingspan of about 2 cms.

    The species is found in

  • Indonesia,
  • Malaysia,

    and northern Australia including

  • Northern Territory, and
  • Queensland.
