Geyer was a German artist who initially wrote and illustrated various supplements to Jacob Hübner's works on Lepidoptera during the period 1806-1841.
Later he was commissioned by the Austrian entomologists Cajetan Rudolf Felder and Alois Friedrich Rogenhofer. Geyer's task was to create exact scientific drawings of the vast insect collection gathered during the famous Austrian Novara Expedition (1857–1859). This historic voyage was the first official scientific circumnavigation of the globe undertaken by the Austrian Empire. Geyer’s highly detailed lithographs were published in the monumental multi-volume work Reise der Österreichischen Fregatte Novara um die Erde, which remains a cornerstone text for identifying global butterfly and moth species
