Embrik Strand was born in Norway, and educated at the University of Oslo. He collected and wrote about many insects in Norway, before taking academic positions at universities in Germany and then Latvia.

He published many papers on Lepidoptera and other arthropods, including being invited to write and illustrate section of Seitz's multi-volume The Macrolepidoptera of the World.

Lithographic plates were prepared from these drawings by engravers by Emil Hochdanz Co., and were printed by Werner & Winter.
