Sébastien Vaillant was a highly respected institutional contractor for the Librairie encyclopédique de Roret (the publisher of the Suites à Buffon series) and the Paris Museum. He was employed by Achille Guenée to illustrate Guenée's Lepidoptera volumes, which were printed by Pierre Engravers in Paris,

Vaillant also illustrated several high-profile French scientific expeditions and natural history anthologies of the mid-1800s including The Algerian Scientific Expedition (Exploration scientifique de l'Algérie). He was hired alongside other natural history artists to illustrate extensive botanical and entomological plates under the supervision of prominent scientists like Jean Gay. His name is preserved as a painter for several multi-volume reference illustrated plates covering Orthoptera and Coleoptera, as well as Lepidoptera.
